About the breed
The Rat Terrier is an American original, with the breed name said to have been coined by President Theodore Roosevelt. These compact, tough, smooth-coated dogs were originally bred as efficient farm exterminators but today are also beloved companion animals.
Rat Terriers are intelligent, energetic dogs known for their loyalty, versatility, and lively personalities. Their balanced, compact build gives them both toughness and elegance, while their friendly and playful nature makes them wonderful companions for active individuals and families.
Rat Terriers come in two size divisions recognized by the AKC:
• Miniature – 10 to 13 inches at the shoulder
• Standard – over 13 inches and up to 18 inches at the shoulder
Their smooth, shiny coat comes in a variety of pied patterns, meaning comparatively large patches of one or more colors in combination with white.
Originally developed for farm work, these smoothly muscled dogs were bred for the efficient movement required for a long day's work. This heritage contributes to their athletic ability, intelligence, and versatility today.
Temperament
Rat Terriers are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and energetic personalities. Originally bred as farm dogs and skilled vermin hunters, they are naturally alert, quick learners, and eager to work alongside their people.
They are typically affectionate with their families and enjoy being involved in daily activities, whether that means playing in the yard, going for walks, or relaxing with their owners at home. Rat Terriers are often described as happy, playful, and highly devoted companions.
Because of their terrier heritage, they may have a strong prey drive and enjoy activities that challenge both their minds and bodies. With proper socialization and consistent training, Rat Terriers make excellent companions for active individuals and families.
Exercise & Activity Needs
Rat Terriers are an active and intelligent breed that benefit from regular physical activity and mental stimulation. Originally bred to work on farms, they have natural endurance and enjoy activities that allow them to use both their bodies and minds.
Daily exercise such as walks, playtime, training sessions, or time to run in a safely fenced area helps keep them happy and well-balanced. They often enjoy games, problem-solving activities, and learning new skills.
While Rat Terriers have plenty of energy, they also tend to bond closely with their families and enjoy relaxing indoors once their exercise needs are met.
Providing regular activity, training, and interaction helps ensure a Rat Terrier grows into a well-adjusted and content companion.
Living With a Rat Terrier
Rat Terriers are highly adaptable dogs that can thrive in a variety of living situations when their exercise and social needs are met. They do best in homes where they can be actively involved with their families and enjoy being part of daily life.
These dogs form strong bonds with their owners and are often happiest when they have plenty of interaction, playtime, and companionship. Their intelligence and eagerness to learn make them highly trainable, and many owners enjoy participating in activities such as obedience training, agility, or other dog sports.
Because of their terrier background, Rat Terriers are naturally alert and curious. Early socialization and consistent training help them develop into well-mannered and confident companions.
With the right balance of exercise, training, and attention, Rat Terriers make loyal, entertaining, and affectionate members of the family.
